The Software Engineer Chapter

When people hear the term “coffee roastery”, they probably don’t imagine a software engineer behind the scenes, carefully orchestrating the process like lines of code on a screen. But that’s exactly where my story begins—a tale of passion, precision, and the pursuit of creating something that brings joy to people every day.

Cup of coffee

For years, I lived and thrived in the world of software engineering. Designing systems, solving complex problems, and optimizing processes were my daily routines. I relished the intellectual challenges, the satisfaction of a clean, efficient solution, and the ability to impact people’s lives through technology.

But as much as I enjoyed my work, I often found myself craving something more tangible—something I could physically create and share. Software, while impactful, is intangible. You can’t hold a piece of code in your hand or share it over a conversation like you can a cup of coffee.

The Spark: My Love for Coffee

Coffee had always been a constant companion during my long coding sessions. But over time, it became much more than a source of caffeine. I began exploring specialty coffee, intrigued by the unique flavors of beans from different regions. A cup of Guatemalan coffee spoke of chocolate and citrus, while beans from Ethiopia danced with floral and berry notes.

As my interest grew, I started researching the art and science of coffee roasting. I quickly realized that roasting coffee is much like programming. Both require a deep understanding of process and precision. Both demand experimentation, debugging, and continuous improvement. And both can produce extraordinary results when approached with care and curiosity.

The Leap: Building KavaOli

The decision to pause a secure job as a software engineer and dive into the world of coffee roastery wasn’t made overnight. It was a combination of passion and a desire for a new challenge. But what really helped me take the leap was knowing that my skills as an engineer wouldn’t go to waste—they’d just be applied in a different way.

That’s how KavaOli was born.

I started small, roasting beans at home, experimenting with profiles, and learning the intricacies of green coffee. Every bean told a story, and I was determined to highlight its best attributes. Gradually, I invested in professional equipment and built a brand that reflects my dedication to quality, sustainability, and creativity.

Bridging Two Worlds: How Engineering Shapes My Roastery

You might wonder how software engineering fits into coffee roasting. Surprisingly, it’s everywhere in my process:

  1. Data-Driven Roasting:
Just like in coding, roasting coffee involves variables that must be monitored and adjusted. Time, temperature, airflow—these are my “if-else” statements and loops. I use tools and software to log and analyze every roast, ensuring consistency and allowing for experimentation.

  2. Automation and Optimization:
My engineering background has given me an edge in optimizing processes. I’ve set up systems to streamline inventory management, automate order tracking, and manage roasting schedules. Efficiency is key, especially as the business grows.

  3. Website and E-Commerce:
Building and managing the KavaOli website has been a passion project in itself. From the design to the shopping cart functionality, my software engineering expertise ensures a seamless experience for customers who want to browse, learn about coffee, and order their favorite beans.

  4. Problem-Solving Mindset:
Roasting coffee is an art, but when something goes wrong—like a roast that doesn’t turn out as expected—my analytical mindset kicks in. I troubleshoot, adjust, and refine, just as I would with a buggy piece of code.

The Reward: Connecting Through Coffee

Today, I wake up excited to face each new challenge, whether it’s perfecting a roast for a new bean or working on a collaboration with a local business. The joy of seeing someone smile over a cup of coffee I roasted is incomparable. It’s a reminder that even though I’ve shifted careers, the essence of my work remains the same: creating something meaningful and sharing it with the world.

So, the next time you sip a cup of KavaOli coffee, know that it’s more than just a drink. It’s the result of curiosity, creativity, and a love for both precision and art. From one passion to another, I hope it brings as much joy to your day as it does to mine.
